There are 2 reasons for having a website.
Reason one: You can advise your customers about your website via business cards, letter heads, email signature and other promotional materials. Your customer can visit your website and obtain information relating to your products and services, location, hours of operation and so on. For this alone, it is well worth while having a website.
Reason 2: You can use search engines to send you NEW customers (Meaning search engines can send you MONEY!).
Everything you do to your website, the content you put on the pages, the words and number of words you put in each page, how many links you have and what exactly the words used in the link are, the words you put in the page title, the key words you use, the links coming into the page, EVERYTHING you do to a website page to achieve a situation where search engines are "sending you money", this is called "search engine optimization".
It is sad to see so many people that build nice websites at a considerable cost in both time and money, just to have the website "sit there, unfound", because they have NO idea what SEO is or how to apply it to their websites.
